Pastoral Care at Lutheran Hillside Village
Greetings in the name of our Lord!
First Kings contains the delightful story of Elijah and the widow at Zarephath. We are told that they spend many days together, and during that time God’s word is fulfilled. Elijah and the widow are involved in mutual accompaniment. They are a blessing to each other.
It is that same blessing of accompaniment that the chaplains at Lutheran Hillside Village (LHV) seek to bring to the older adults who call LHV home. Not only do the chaplains serve as a blessing to the older adults at LHV; but they in turn, are a blessing to the chaplains. Spiritual Care at LHV is anchored in a belief that all persons are created in the image of God. This ministry affirms the worth and spiritual freedom of all persons and treats them with respect and dignity. The chaplains believe that health encompasses physical, emotional, relational, ethical, and spiritual concerns; and that God is the source of all healing. Spiritual practices enhance health and well-being.
The LHV Spiritual Care Team welcomes persons of all faiths to all of the programs of care. All modalities of spiritual care are done in a manner which respects that person’s faith tradition. The Spiritual Care Team values the contributions of each community of faith to the health of individuals, families, and communities. The LHV Chaplains are aware of diverse religious and cultural beliefs and practices and/or special needs surrounding significant life passages. The Chaplains offer spiritual care as integral members of a multi-disciplinary team, fostering a holistic philosophy and promoting inter-professional partnering. The Chaplains are available to assist residents and families in resolving issues that involve ethical and/or religious values and concerns. They endeavor to support the relationships which residents and families have to their home faith communities. The LHV Spiritual Care Team provides many services, including but not limited to: regular visitation, hospital visitation, change in condition support, family support, grief support, liaison with Parish Pastor, and health care team support. The LHV Spiritual Care Team has five chaplains that offer care to all persons of any faith tradition, and to those without a religious affiliation.

A Tradition of Support
Throughout our 45-year history, it has been our tradition to continue caring for residents in our health care center who outlive their financial resources and can no longer afford to pay for their care. However, this does not come without a cost. The Illinois Medicaid program pays less than half the cost of care for these residents. This amounts to a shortfall of more than $400,000 each year. Please consider becoming a part of our family of donors to help us bring security, peace of mind, and dignity to our seniors who are now in their hour of need.
You may give in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one, and we will acknowledge your gift to the appropriate persons. All gifts are tax deductible as allowed by law.
