The Benefits of Education

Education can be life changing. Just ask Jazzy Miller, a Community Clinical Educator and RN at Lenoir Woods, a Lutheran Senior Services (LSS) community in Columbia, Missouri. “It is so beneficial to have the support of your work family, and the financial assistance encourages you to further your education and career,” said Jazzy. She began her career at Lenoir Woods almost 12 years ago as a Certified Nurse’s Aid (CNA) who had completed Registered Nurse (RN) training at Columbia College but had not taken the exam to officially become an RN. She knew the material but explains, “I am not a great test taker,” said Jazzy.

The Lenoir Woods Clinical Educator at the time noticed that Jazzy had a special spark and wanted to help her shine even brighter. The educator helped Jazzy gain confidence in herself and her abilities until she was prepared to take on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and become an RN.  “I passed with flying colors,” said Jazzy.

As an RN, Jazzy became the REACH Short Stay Rehabilitation night nurse at Lenoir Woods. Inspired to follow in her mentor’s footsteps, Jazzy then applied to become a Community Clinical Educator (CCE) at Lenoir Woods. “Meeting other CCE team members across LSS was wonderful. There are so many knowledgeable nurses and educators that come together to make resident care the best it can be,” she said.

Through the LSS Education Assistance Program, she continues to explore educational opportunities. The program offers tuition reimbursement up to $10,000 for qualifying employees pursuing college degrees, professional certifications, technical school certificates, or GEDs. “The application process was easy with the help of the Human Resources Department,” said Jazzy.  “I encourage all of my fellow co-workers to take advantage of such a great benefit that is typically not offered at other senior living or healthcare providers,” she added.

She has taken two classes toward earning a bachelor’s degree. “Being the Lenoir Woods Community Educator, I never stop learning. Growth and nourishing my mind with new skills and techniques keeps me current!”

Making educational achievement attainable supports LSS’ focus on creating a culture that brings out the best in each other. In addition to the discounted tuition provided through partnerships with universities, team members have access other LSS Educational Assistance Benefit programs.
