Directing Harmony

To be a part of the Bluffs Singers Chorus at Meramec Bluffs, a Lutheran Senior Services Life Plan Community in Ballwin, Missouri, there’s just one requirement: You must enjoy singing.

Elinor Spiller definitely fulfills that requirement and more. She started with the chorus 10 years ago playing the piano as the accompanist. The Bluffs Singers Chorus had just started a few years before and didn’t have a regular accompanist, so Spiller was a welcome addition. After a few years, she had the opportunity to direct the choir when the original director stepped down and there wasn’t anyone else interested.

“The chorus is a love of mine,” explained Spiller of the choir. “I didn’t want it to fold. I was willing to try directing.”

Spiller was more than qualified to lead the group. She’s been involved in choir since high school. She was also a part of her church choir, even directing the children’s choir there. Admittedly, music is a big part of her life and has been a big part of her 63-year marriage to her husband Earl too.

The 40-plus member Bluffs Singers Chorus performs several times a year with two of those being large concerts. Other appearances by the choir include Maundy Thursday, Memorial Day, All Saints Day, and Veterans Day. Choir members also get together for caroling during the holidays and sing at memorial services too. Performances are always well attended and supported by the community.

Spiller has since stepped down as director and now she joins the choir as a soprano.

“We’re a close-knit group. We care for each other and have a lot of fun,” said Spiller. “We’re always welcoming new residents who enjoy singing. That is the requirement: That you enjoy singing.”
